How to Care for Floors Based on Surface Type

· Santrel International

Floor care begins with one essential question: what is the surface made of? Tile, vinyl, laminate, sealed wood and natural stone have different tolerances for moisture, tools and cleaning products.

Identify the flooring

Consult installation documents or the manufacturer's guidance when possible. If the material is uncertain, use a conservative method and test in a hidden area.

Remove abrasive debris

Dust, sand and grit can scratch a finish when dragged across the floor. Sweep or vacuum using an attachment appropriate for the material.

Use the right amount of moisture

Some floors tolerate damp cleaning, while others can be damaged by excess water. Avoid soaking seams, edges and joints.

Select a compatible product

Follow the cleaner's label and the flooring manufacturer's instructions. Do not mix products, and avoid using a treatment designed for one surface on another.

Work methodically

Clean from the far side of the room toward the exit. Change dirty water or cloths so residue is not redistributed.

Protect high-traffic areas

Use entrance mats, wipe spills promptly and place protective pads beneath furniture. Regular light maintenance usually reduces the need for aggressive cleaning.

Before using any new product, test a small inconspicuous area and allow it to dry fully before evaluating the result.
